Pontblyddyn C.C. is one of, if not the, oldest cricket club in Wales, with the earliest known reference dating back to 1840. According to Sir Garfield Sobers it is unique! On a visit to the club he commented that it was the only ground in the world where he had to cross a river bridge to reach the field of play.
Our beautiful setting on the Hartsheath Estate, with rivers flowing on 3 sides of the ground makes it one of the most picturesque grounds in Great Britain.
Both our first and second eleven's play in the North Wales Cricket League, the 1XI in the Premier league and the 2XI newly promoted to Division 2 for 2010. We have a 3rd XI Team for young players on the verge of senior cricket who we hope will continue their success in the newly formed third team league in 2010. We participate in the Welsh knock-out and the Flintshire knock-out tournaments and fulfill the criteria of a "Village," being probably one of the smallest villages in Wales.
We are an Accredited Club and hold the prestigious CLUBMARK award, for which the club has recently been re-Accredited, indicating that we are a club that is well managed and organised.
For the last 5 years, the club has participated in the ECB/CBW initiative 'Chance to Shine' which aims at restoring cricket to the curriculum in state schools. We will again be participating in 2010. Coaches from the club work in local schools throughout the summer term to further our partnerships and encourage more youngsters to take up the game.
We are proud of our junior section, we have successful teams at under 9, 11, 13, and under 15 levels who compete in the NEWJCD leagues and we are also actively encouraging girls to form a team. Our ECB CA qualified coaches ensure the youngsters have the highest level of skills training, with coaching at indoor nets during the winter and regular weekly coaching during the season.
The youngsters are the future of cricket and their development is nurtured at Pontblyddyn. We look to give every youngster the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
